Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

LEARN ABOUT LAYERING

Why Merino Wool?

Moisture Wicking

Minus33 Merino Wool regulates the amount of moisture on your skin by absorbing any moisture or sweat on your body. Then, the absorbed moisture evaporates out of the fabric into the atmosphere.

Anti-Microbial

Merino Wool fibers naturally reject any bacteria in moisture or sweat as it is wicked away, so foot fungus and smelly odor will not be a problem while wearing our products.

Insulates When Wet

Wool will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet or clammy. If you do get wet, wool will insulate you better than cotton or polyester materials.

Fire Resistant

Merino Wool insulates against high temperatures and does not readily catch fire. If it does, it self-extinguishes. When Merino burns, it doesn’t melt and stick to the skin like synthetic fabrics do.

UV Protection

Don’t worry about sunburn on a sunny day summiting a peak. Lightweight layers have a UPF rating of 25. Midweight and Expedition have a UPF rating of 50+.

Renewable

Merino Wool has a low environmental footprint and naturally returns to the elements. Shear a merino sheep in the morning, and in the afternoon they’re happily nibbling their way towards renewing next season’s clip.

TOTAL EASY CARE

MACHINE WASH AND DRY

Total Easy Care (TEC) Merino apparel is designed for today's busy lifestyle. Total Easy Care Merino garments are all machine-washable, and are suitable for tumble drying.

Even after frequent laundering they retain an 'as new' appearance. They won't shrink, lose their shape, fade or color-bleed. They remain soft and comfortable for the life of the garment.

Short life span

Warm sweater when used with a jacket. If there’s any wind it blows right through it. I’ve had this sweater for 11 months and I have a hole in the left elbow and the cuff is coming apart. I hoped it would have lasted longer than a year.

Hi Drew,

Please call us at 1-855-646-8733, and we can help you set up a return and perform a quality inspection.

Kodiak expedition is da bomb

Really enjoy this wool sweater. Kept me warm in multiple cold, windy, rainy nights watching my kids at track meets. Fits well in all the right places. The large hood took my a bit to dial in because I’m not really into oversized hoods, but I finally found a way to see well and still be covered by tugging the neck section back a bit. It stayed in place well.
This hoody has replaced my favorite hoody from REI that lasted 25 years of everyday use? But finally gave up the ghost when the seems pulled out and the material had worn so thin, repair was no longer possible (though I did try). That thing grew with me then shrunk with me over the years. This hoody has the same properties only in wool! I have no doubts that this will be my last hoody I’ll ever have to buy. Thank you so so much.

Dano,

We are glad you really like the Kodiak Fleece Men's Brushed Wool Hoodie - Expedition! Great to hear It kept you warm in multiple cold, windy, rainy nights watching your kids at track meets. Glad you found a way to make the large hood work. We are happy to hear that we have your future support.

Very nice. Wish it were warmer

I bought this to go along with a merino wool long-sleeve shirt from this same company, for times when that shirt wasn't warm enough indoors in winter. This hoodie is indeed thicker than the shirt, and warmer than the shirt, but surprisingly still wasn't as warm as I hoped it would be, even though it is the thickest currently offered.

So, back to adding layers to get the needed warmth. For instance, the thumbholes are great when I am out bicycle riding in winter, but the hoodie isn't wind-resistent, so I add a windbreaker on top when riding below 65 degrees. The Merino wool is very comfortable on my skin, not scratchy at all.

This is actually my second hoodie. A small seam failed mysteriously on the first one after a few weeks, so the hoodie was replaced under warranty, which the company did quickly, easily and cheerfully.

Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate your feedback!

Nearly perfect

Perfection with the exception of the hood draw strings. They are set too high on the garment. They should be set at the base of the neck.

Ryan,

Thank you for your feedback! We're sorry to hear that you don't enjoy the hood drawstrings - we'll be sure to pass on your suggestions to our product development team.

Okay hoodie with some serious drawbacks

I've worn this hoodie for about three week now, in varying winter conditions from well below 0F to mid 30s, for up to 8 hours in backcountry conditions.

It has some positive qualities but overall is just so-so. The fabric quality is great—it's thick, warm, and comfortable. I've always worn it under an outer layer so don't know how it holds up to scratching with branches etc but it seems quite sturdy. However, I bought it because I wanted something with a hood to wear under my shell to keep snow off my neck, and it doesn't work very well.

The hood is absolutely huge, and flops over my face. If I tighten the drawstring even a little, it covers my eyes completely. And the hood is really wide where it attaches to the main garment at the neck, so when it's on my head, it flops around if the zipper isn't all the way up. But despite the fact that the hood is too baggy, the neck is too tight, so when I zip it up to the top, it's uncomfortably tight on my neck.

Overall, this is a fine garment if you don't care about actually wearing the hood. If you want a functional hooded shirt for cold weather, look elsewhere.

Jonathan,

Thank you for your detailed feedback. We apologize for the disappointment that you have with the fit of your Kodiak Fleece Hoodie. As a company, we are always looking for ways to improve and customer feedback is very important to us. We will pass along your review to our design team to be discussed and considered in future production runs of this item.
